ROAS calculation guide

How to calculate ROAS

ROAS is a ratio, so the calculation is short. The important part is using revenue, spend, currency, and attribution settings from the same reporting period.

1

1. Use attributed revenue

Take the revenue your platform assigns to the campaign or channel. Do not mix it with total store revenue unless you are measuring blended ROAS.

2

2. Use matching ad spend

Use the ad cost for the same dates, currency, channel, and attribution window as the revenue figure.

3

3. Divide and interpret

Divide attributed revenue by ad spend. Read the multiplier and percentage together, then compare the result with your margin and target.

ROAS formula and what each input means

The standard ROAS formula measures revenue returned for each unit of advertising cost. A result of 3.00x means the campaign produced three dollars of attributed revenue for every dollar spent. It does not automatically mean the campaign produced three dollars of profit.

ROAS = attributed revenue ÷ ad spend

Attributed revenue

Revenue credited to the ads

Use the platform or analytics source you are reviewing.

Ad spend

Cost of the same campaign window

Include the spend basis that your reporting team uses consistently.

Reporting window

The same start and end dates

Delayed conversions can make a short window look incomplete.

Currency and attribution

One currency and one attribution rule

Different platform windows are not directly comparable.

Choose comparable inputs

A correct formula can still produce a misleading decision when the inputs use different definitions. Keep these four checks beside the calculation.

Worked ROAS example

Suppose a campaign spends $1,000 and receives $3,000 in attributed revenue during the same reporting period.

The result is a revenue efficiency ratio. Add product cost, fulfillment, payment fees, refunds, discounts, taxes, and overhead when the decision is about profit rather than attributed revenue alone.

Attributed revenue$3,000Revenue credited to ads
Ad spend$1,000Cost for the same period
ROAS3.00x / 300%$3,000 ÷ $1,000

ROAS vs profit, break-even ROAS, and POAS

These metrics answer different questions. Use the one that matches the decision you need to make.

MetricWhat it tells youBest next question
ROASRevenue returned per ad dollarIs the campaign generating attributed revenue efficiently?
Break-even ROASMinimum ratio after entered variable costsDoes revenue cover the costs included in the model?
POASContribution profit per ad dollarHow much contribution profit remains after those costs?

Use the Break-Even ROAS Calculator to find your floor and the POAS Calculator to compare contribution profit. The ROAS Calculator remains the fastest way to check campaign revenue efficiency.

How to use ROAS in Google Ads and Meta Ads

Platform reports are useful, but their labels and attribution windows can differ from your finance or analytics reports.

Google Ads

Check the conversion action, conversion value rules, date range, and bid strategy before comparing a Google Ads ROAS with another source. “How to calculate ROAS in Google Ads” usually means using the value and cost columns from the same view.

Meta Ads

Confirm the purchase event, attribution setting, reporting timezone, and whether the value includes discounts or taxes. Use the Meta Ads ROAS Calculator when you also need CPA, CPC, CTR, or conversion rate.

Common mistakes and limitations

Use the result as decision support. It is only as reliable as the definitions and period behind the inputs.

  • ROAS does not subtract product cost, shipping, payment fees, refunds, taxes, or fixed overhead unless you model them separately.
  • A short attribution window can undercount conversions; a long window can credit revenue that would have happened without the ad.
  • Comparing platforms with different currencies, timezones, conversion events, or attribution windows can create false winners.
  • A high ROAS can still be unprofitable when the contribution margin is thin or operational costs are high.

ROAS calculation FAQ

What is the ROAS formula?

ROAS equals attributed revenue divided by ad spend. If revenue is $3,000 and spend is $1,000, ROAS is 3.00x, or 300%.

How do I calculate ROAS as a percentage?

Calculate the multiplier first, then multiply it by 100. A ROAS of 3.00x becomes 300%.

Does ROAS include product costs?

Basic ROAS does not. Add product, fulfillment, payment, refund, tax, and overhead assumptions separately when you need a profit view.

Is a 3x ROAS good?

It depends on your contribution margin, operating costs, desired profit, and attribution quality. Compare 3x with your break-even and target ROAS instead of using a universal benchmark.

How do I calculate ROAS in Google Ads?

Use the conversion value attributed to the selected Google Ads conversion actions and divide it by the matching ad cost. Keep the date range, currency, and attribution definition consistent.

What is the difference between ROAS and POAS?

ROAS uses attributed revenue, while POAS uses contribution profit after the costs included in the model. ROAS is an efficiency ratio; POAS is closer to a margin decision.
